Although non-leather shoes have been around for decades, most if not all, were “accidently vegan.” In order to produce shoes at the lowest possible price, cheap, man-made materials were used thus making the shoe “accidently vegan” and consequently low quality.
However, in the 1990s a new category of vegan shoes began to emerge where using non-animal AND high quality materials was a core principle of the product as was maintaining a satisfactory level of comfort equal to that of high end leather shoes. Since then several small brands have surfaced dedicated to animal friendly, high quality footwear.
